Dr. Arun Netravali's Technological Contributions:
Dr. Netravali led the research and development of Bell Labs' high definition television (HDTV) effort, in the 1990’s. A video encoder based on his work is used today, by more than 150 TV stations for their HDTV broadcasts.
He is cited for his "pioneering contributions that transformed TV from analog to digital, enabling numerous integrated circuits, systems and services in broadcast TV, CATV, DBS, HDTV, and multimedia over the Internet; and for technical expertise and leadership, which have kept Bell Labs at the forefront in communications technology."
Publications, memberships, and awards
Dr. Netravali’s publications include more than 170 technical papers. He has co-authored three books: Digital Picture Representation and Compression (1987); Visual Communications Systems (1989); Digital Video: An Introduction to MPEG-2 (1996).
He holds more than 70 patents in the areas of computer networks, human interfaces to machines, picture processing and digital television.
He is a member of Tau Beta Phi and Sigma Xi, and the United States National Academy of Engineering. He is also a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and the AAAS.

EMMY for the HDTV Grand Alliance (1994)
Computers & Communications Prize (NEC, Japan) (1997)
Frederik Philips Award from the IEEE (2000)
NASSCOM (National Association of Software and Services Companies in India) Medal (2000)
Kilby Medal from the IEEE (2001)
Padma Bhushan Award from the Indian Government (2001)
U.S. National Medal of Technology (2002)
